What is an ETF?

An ETF is an exchange traded fund that consists of a portfolio of securities bought or sold on the secondary market. Today, most ETFs track performance close to an index (e.g. S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average). However, like Huntington Strategy Shares, ETFs can also be actively managed and invest in stocks with a specific objective (e.g. capital appreciation and income).

What are some characteristics of an ETF?

Since ETFs are traded on the secondary market (an exchange) they are able to be bought and sold throughout the day. ETF managers are able to take advantage of market shifts throughout the day. Also, ETFs tend to be more cost effective than mutual funds.
